Zambia’s Record Maize Crop Shifts Regional Supply Outlook

Zambia is heading toward a record maize harvest of 4.9 million MT in MY 2026/27, up 28% from the previous record, following the drought-affected 2024/25 season.
The strong production outlook is improving domestic maize availability and supporting lower and more stable prices, while consumption is forecast at 3.1 million MT, driven by household, milling, industrial, and feed demand.
With the surplus, the government has lifted maize export restrictions, with exports expected to reach around 500,000 MT, mainly to Zimbabwe, Malawi, and the DRC.

However, exports are likely to remain below potential due to competition from South Africa and Zambia’s continued focus on domestic food security. Overall, the record crop is expected to keep the market well supplied, limit upward price pressure, and strengthen Zambia’s position as a regional maize supplier.
